Specification Technical Writer - New York, Chicago, DC

Our Technical Resources team is seeking talented, detailed individuals to serve as a Specifications Writers.   Reporting to the Specification Principal in Charge, the Specifications Writer will be responsible for developing detailed project specifications and work with project teams from various studios and offices in coordinating contract documents.  The Specifications Writer will write specifications and compile Project Manuals for construction projects, as well as develop and maintain both firm- and practice area-specific master specifications for future use.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Review the procurement & contracting requirements;
  • Review drawings and projects information to write and edit specifications for projects;
  • Coordinate compliance with project requirements, Perkins Eastman Standards, technical conditions existing laws, rules, codes and regulations;
  • Develop and maintain a library of commonly used architectural and building system specifications in conjunction with members of the Technical Resources team;
  • Assist project architects and designers with shop drawings submittals and substitution review;
  • Edit Division 01 General Requirement sections;
  • Meet with construction teams to identify areas of specifications improvement;
  • Act as a risk management resource to advise project managers and leaders;
  • Provide informal quality management reviews and technical advice in design development through construction document phases;
  • Foster internal and external client service mindset;
  • Conduct internal specification training;
  • Maintain and develop vendor relationships;
  • Mentor technical staff;
  • Attend meetings with project teams, owners and owners’ representatives, and construction managers;


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture or Master’s in Architecture preferred;
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in specifications development preferred;
  • Registered Architect and NCARB registration preferred;
  • Construction Specifications Institute CCS Certification or CDT  strongly suggested;
  • LEED Certification preferred;
  • Strong knowledge of construction procedures, building codes, and schedules;
  • Strong knowledge of sustainability, integrated design and LEED guidelines;
  • Proficiency in specifications software programs such as BSD Speclink or Avitru MasterSpec preferred;
  • Ability to research and apply research to technical documents;
  • Ability to multitask, work on multiple projects and meet deadlines;
  • Ability to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally;
  • Proficiency in MS Office, including Word, Excel and Outlook;
  • Familiarity with Revit is preferred.
