The Opportunity:
Perkins Eastman has an immediate need for an Intermediate Project Designer (Urban) for our New York, NY studio. May telecommute up to two days per week. Little domestic travel may be involved.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Consult with clients under direct supervision of licensed architect regarding functional and spatial requirements for new structure or renovation, prepare design and specification documents including master plan design, guidelines, and policy recommendations.
- Develop construction plans based on redline markups.
- Coordinate and plan project layout and integrate engineering elements into unified design for client review and approval.
- Coordinate structural system drawings, including air conditioning, heating, ventilation systems, electrical systems, communication systems, and plumbing.
- Prepare and maintain design and construction documents, drawings, visual renderings and reports, schedules, surveys, and specifications.
- Aid in completion of artistic and technical aspects of architectural design, including conceptual development, exploratory illustrations, 3D documentation, scaled models, building codes and standards compliance, preparation of specifications, construction drawings, and budget tracking and cost analysis.
- Evaluate design feasibility regarding appearance, safety, function, serviceability, budget, product costs/method, and market characteristics.
- Modify and refine designs using working models to conform with customer specifications or design trends.
- Evaluate technical constraints, including reviewing building codes, municipal requirements, energy compliance regulations and limits, LEED guidelines, and other recommended building practices. Perform on-site surveys, reviews, and inspections to coordinate existing conditions.
- Work directly with Principals and senior staff on projects of all scales and complexities.
- Develop design and planning process for multiple urban typologies, and produce/coordinate master plan and policy reporting.
- Develop plan, design, and documentation of large-scale development, public, master plan, and urban design, planning and policy projects.
- Create urban and public designs to meet client and user needs on projects of all scales.
- Assist in project feasibility development and evaluation of site zoning, parking, and building location. Develop test fits.
- Assist with master planning services, including site and building components, block evaluation, and open lot diagramming.
- Assist project manager and studio team to prepare site plan applications and community engagement.
Required Qualifications:
- Must have Bachelor’s in Architecture or related field and 6 years relevant experience with design and documentation of medium to large scale urban design projects, and required skills (6 years experience).
- In the alternative, must have Master’s in Architecture or related field and 4 years relevant experience with design and documentation of medium to large scale urban design projects, and required skills (4 years experience).
- Required skills include: design and documentation of projects covering urban design, campus master planning, district planning, site analysis, site plan applications, feasibility studies, street and block and open space diagramming, planning reports, city submission packages, design intent and urban standards, public realm design and coordination with built form; writing policy reports and community engagement; developing the creative and technical process throughout the life of a project; working on domestic and international large scale projects from initial concept to final submission; maintaining design continuity and standards; training and mentoring staff; preparing client presentations and design drawings; coordinating large consultant teams and internal project teams; reviewing project documents for design conformance and quality control; communicating with clients, community, local officials, and team leadership to coordinate design and policy issues; ArcGIS mapping software; 2D software including AutoCAD, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe After Effects and Adobe InDesign, and Affinity Creative Suite; 3D software including Revit, Rhino, Python, and SketchUp; and visualization software including V-ray and Enscape and Lumen.
